Self Defense from Inside Position: Osoto Gari

Now we're going to show you an osoto gari. And pretty much an osoto gari ari is from the inside position of the body. So, it's a technique that's already there. Boom, you're in the inside position. Make sure when you block that you're also going to grab the arm, just for control. You can also use the arm later after the throw for any wristlock or arm bars. You take your right hand. You can throw a loosening up technique. But for the safety of your partner what you want to do now is just take your right hand and grab the other side of the gi top into the collar. Place your right leg behind. Also keep in mind before you do that that to make sure you get the upper body off balance. You want to be able to twist with your arms and put your upper body into it. Then step behind kicking out the leg. Alright? We'll try it again a little bit faster. Alright, throw a hook punch. Block. Again, step through. Make sure that you're twisting the body to get it off balance. You twist. Kick out and then down to the ground. Keep in mind, when you throw your, when you're throwing somebody the faster and the smoother that you throw it's going to be a lot easier on them. If you throw it nice and slow and sort of breaks it up. It's actually harder on the person's body. So, if you go ahead and go in there, practice the technique over and over again before you actually throw the person. And then when you finally get a chance to actually throw them, make sure it's nice and smooth. Because that's actually going to help out your training partner. So, there you go. That's an osoto gari which is from the inside position of the body.
