What NOT to Do When Leaving a Phone Message

Alright, now let's talk about some things that you don't want to do when leaving voicemails. You're going to be professional, which means you're not going to leave personal messages. By the way Tim, it was great to see you at the bar last night. Boy, you really tied one on. Or, hey, great golfing with you. Leave the personal messages out of it. Keep it business, because you're going to keep it brief. Another thing that you don't want to do, no matter how hard it is to resist this, you don't want to leave repetitious messages. Not, don't, well they haven't called me back, I'm going to call them again. Leave another message. Leave another message. Leave another message. Don't do that. You allow at least 6 to 12 hours for a message to be returned, unless it's an urgent matter. But don't just keep calling and leaving voice messages. Very clearly, the person can't call you back at this time, or they would have. And, the last thing that you want to do is never hide behind voicemail. I don't want to deal with it. I'm going to let them leave me a message, and then I'm going to know exactly when to call them, so I can leave them a message. Just deal with the situation. Thats, you know, hiding behind problems, was not what voicemail was invented for.
