Hands & Feet Placement: Standard Manual Transmission Driving: Free Video
Hi! It’s Rob with Expert Village. There are a couple of tips to keep in mind when you are learning how to drive a manual transmission. One thing to know is that you should never drive with your left foot on the pedal while you are in motion. Once you are done shifting, you should move your left foot over to what is actually called the dead pedal or dead panel and on that you will see is off to your left. Another thing you should not do is keep your hands on the shifter. Once you shift, put your hand back on the steering wheel, two hands on the wheel at all times, keep your hands down on the lower part either 9 and 3 and 8 and 4. I don’t like to put my hands on the upper part of the steering wheel anymore because of air bags. You never know when an accident can happen or when you can hit a deer or something. If your hands are down here, either 8 and 4 or 9 and 3, if an airbag deploys, the hands will be out to here as opposed to up here. Your hands are going to come up and maybe strike you in the face. Keep your hands off the shifter. Once you are done shifting, put your hands back on the wheel.
