Differences in Montessori & Preschool

Now I'm going to talk about the difference between traditional and Montessori preschool. I taught preschool for many, many years before I switched to Montessori, and I really find advantages to both. One of the things that I really found as an advantage for Montessori is that they make things very concrete. Makes things so that the children can actually see them, feel them, touch them. One of the examples of that are the geometric solids. To explain to a child that this is an ellipsoid, it really helps that they can hold that ellipsoid in their hand, they can see it and feel it. And I think that that is one of the main things that makes Montessori a little bit different. One of the other activities that makes things really concrete, if they take ten of these beads and line them up, they'll be the same size as this ten bar, so it just kind of gives it some stability and makes it a little more concrete. This was one of the things that really sold me on Montessori when I first learned about it. One of the other things is that we've established such a nice rhythm with how to educate children, and the natural progression so that it really helps to set the children up for success. Now traditional, I find the advantages in the creative play, imagination, art, and those type of things. So at Northstar Montessori Preschool we actually have implemented the things that we feel are important from traditional into our Montessori curriculum. So that is the difference, in my opinion, of Montessori and traditional preschool.
