Meend Technique for the Sita
The soul of Sitar is called Meend and it is the technique of pulling vertically to produce notes which you can also produce on the Fret. So for example, we can embellish them a little bit first on the Fret or we can just pull them. So just pulling. So for this you need calluses, it hurts for a long time and you need a very concentrated kind of practice which even becomes tedious but without doing that you don’t get the strength, flexibility and calluses. So you start very simply by just pulling one note. You can start check yourself by playing it on the Fret first. Down here you can pull with both fingers and again I repeat it is important to have your thumb low down on the neck because that will give you a leverage for your fingers to be pulling. If you are grasping you won’t get that. So you have to kind of hang your hand and this is actually going to give you a base for you to pull down on.
