Using Your Back in Head First Diving Entry

Okay, welcome everybody. I'm Bobby Larew. We're using our back in diving. How do we use our back? How do we keep a nice, straight line when we're trying to enter the water? It's really important because if you hit the water with a back that's not straight you could hurt yourself. It's true, you really could hurt yourself. So how do we protect ourselves but at the same time make our back look good in a front first entry? Here's what you can do. Lie down on a mat. As you lie down on the mat what you should concentrate on for a flat back is if somebody were to put a heavy weight on your stomach, you want to try to push your back down to touch the mat, okay? As you push your back down to touch the mat, what you're doing is actually flattening it out, okay? If you are arching, you'll feel that there's a space here in your back, and you can already feel, probably, the tension in the lower back. So, again, if you want to have a nice straight back, here's an exercise that you can do; just lie down on the mat, pretend that somebody's placing a weight on your stomach, and it pushes your back down to touch the mat and be flat. That's what you need to do with your back to make sure it's straight and not arched.
