Sleep & ADHD

One of the most ironic pieces of advice I have to my fellow ADHDers out there who are trying to live without medication treatment for their ADHD is to get plenty of sleep and make sure you are well rested. Not only do we live in a society where sleep comes at an increasing premium and we have more and more to fit into our days and less and less time to rest and recuperate from these days. But for people with ADHD we tend to have a two fold sleep issue. It is not only hard for us to relax our minds at night to get to bed. For some reason something about laying down in a quiet dark room just makes you think of anything and everything. It is also harder for us to get up and get going in the morning. Once our bodies finally achieve a state of rest they seem to want to stay there longer. We are already naturally sort of disorganized, distracted unfocused sort of person. There is something about waking up in the morning that just doesn't go as well for us as it does for others. However, by practicing good sleep hygiene, going to bed at the same time every night, staying away from caffeine and sugar. We can assure that our bodies get the rest that they need. And it may come down to making life changes and schedule changes. You need sleep to be focused; you need sleep for proper mental energy. That's true of anybody not just ADHD people but we need focus and mental energy just a little more than your average Joe. So proper sleep is very important.
