L Arms in Belly Dancing

Arms are very important in Belly Dancing. Because, they're showing your audience what to watch and they're framing your body. So, you don't want to have arms that are very very busy if your body is doing something very complicated. This arm position, we call L Arms for obvious reasons and can be used in a couple different combinations. It's very nice to take up space on a very large stage. And, it's also very nice because it keeps the arms out and away from the body. So, keeping your moves very nice and clear. So, we can have our arms here. Make sure you're keeping your shoulder down. Palm down, fingers nice and pretty. You want to practice this in front of a mirror, so you get a nice clean look. And, arm up. It's also important here, not to lock the elbow. Keep the elbow just nice and soft. You can turn the palm out or turn the palm in. So, switch arms. Good. Now, you can also take this into here and peering over your shoulder. Again, make sure that shoulder is down. And, another thing you want to watch when your arms are up is that you're not arching your back. You want to make sure your knees are slightly bent and really engage your abdominal muscles. Lift the chest and have a nice grounded centered position from which to move and to frame your body. Again, practice this in front of a mirror until you see those nice clean lines that you have that will accent your other moves.
