Capping & Fermenting Home Brewed Beer
Hello! This is JB with Austin Home Brew Supply. I’m just wrapping up making our first batch of extract based beer. I have just dissolved oxygen into the wort. You can see it is nice and foamy. That’s a good sign. I got a lot of oxygen dissolved. You can see it actually almost in suspension there, so that’s a great sign. You want a lot of dissolved oxygen at this point. Now, I took my solid stopper off. Now, I have the one with a hole in it. This does come with equipment kit and of course, everything is sanitized. Put that guy there, then I got my air lock. Inside of it is what is called the bell. You got the air lock body, the bell inside of it, and then the cap. Put the air lock in right that. I’m going to fill it about a third full of water or sanitizing solution. About like that, right in there. Then you take your lid, and snap it on the top. That’s it for making the beer on day one. This is what’s going to go on from here. This beer will ferment for a week in the primary fermenter. Then, I’ll use my siphoning equipment; my siphon hose and my auto-siphon to transfer, or rack. We have some goofy terms in this business. Racking is to transfer, so we’ll rack the beer from the primary to a secondary fermenter, which will be another glass container. Most of fermentation happens here in the first week. The second week, will be for clearing the beer in the secondary fermenter. Then, we’re going to take it into a bottling bucket, add another dose of sugar called priming sugar, put it in the bottles, and use your bottle fillers. Bottle filler fills the bottles. Caps going on top of the bottles. Capper puts the caps on. Then three weeks later, you will refrigerate one of the bottles overnight, then hopefully you’ll pour it and you’ll love it, and that will be your first beer. That is as simple as it is.
