Youth Basketball Shooting Tips: Where to Look

Hi, this is Sean Hobson and what I want to talk about right now is when using the proper mechanics to make a good shot, its very, very important for you to pickup where you're shooting. You'd be surprised how many people never look at where they're shooting. And when they shoot a bad shot off to the right or the left side, I'll ask them, "Why do you think you shot that, did you see where you were shooting?? And their response usually is "No, I wasn't looking at the basket.? You've to look at where you shoot. You wouldn't write on a piece of paper without looking at where you're writing. You wouldn't drive a cat down the highway not looking where you're driving. So why would you shoot a basketball not looking at where you're trying to shoot the basketball? This is why a lot of players have a hard time shooting what we call a turn around jump shoot because a turn around jump shot is when your back is facing the basket and you have to turn around and make the shot. Its very hard to pickup the rim. So, we always tell our players whether you're driving in on a fast break, whether you're turning to shoot, always pickup your eyes and look at where you're going to shoot. If he's going to shoot a back a shot off the backboard, his eyes need to pickup the square on the back of the goal and then hit the shot. If he's going to shoot a regular shot, he needs to be looking if this is the rim, you need to look right over the front of the rim, not at the front of the rim because then you'll shoot the ball at the front of the rim. You want to look just beyond the rim, but the key is, no matter where you're at on the floor, turn, pickup the goal, look at the where you're shooting. If you're shooting a layup, look up at where you're shooting. You got to see it to make the ball go in the hole.
