Youth Basketball Shooting Tips: Ball Position

Hi, this is Sean Hobson and what we're talking about right now is the proper mechanics to making a good shot. First of all we talked about getting in a good fundamental stance, staying down low, then we talked about having our upper body ready, having our hands there and ready. But what we really want to concentrate on right here is how we put the ball in our hand. It is very important to how people put the ball in the hand. I've seen people take the ball and they palm it so that it looks like its up in the fingertips, that's very hard to control how the ball goes out of your hand. I've seen people curl the ball way back here above their head and then they shoot it out from the top of their head, that's also really hard to control where it?s going. Plus, you have that hand if you bring it back here, you have your other hand in front of your eyes and your eyes are very critical in picking up where you're shooting as well. So if you take the ball and you let it sit right back in the cradle of your hand so that you have a lot of control on it, not in your fingertips, but in the cradle of your hand you're going to be able to get that ball to come off and get good spin on it for a proper shot. Don't put it up on your fingertips, let it sit back in your hand, hold it right here to the side of your head, not above your hand. So its all about the positioning of the ball and how you hold it in order for you to get a good shot off.
