Let's take a look at a standard size, dreadnought body, acoustic guitar that has electronics in it. This instrument features a solid spruce top; all better acoustic guitars will have a solid wood top, as opposed to a laminate or plywood construction. The laminate does not vibrate as freely as the solid woods, and therefore has a slightly inferior tone, though they can both sound very pleasing. In all respects this is a standard acoustic guitar, with the exception that this has a pickup installed under the saddle which picks up the vibrations of the strings that transmits these to the electronics panel here where you can control volume, treble, bass, and other attributes of the sound. The sound is then routed to the end pin jack which not only has a fitting for the strap, but you can plug into and route this to an amplifier with a cable. So this is a full size, dreadnought body, acoustic guitar that's a very good instrument for general purpose playing.
