Another string instrument in the violin family is the viola. Let's take a look at one. This is a 14 inch viola. Violas are sized by the measurement length of the body, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 inches with half-sizes. The viola is tuned one string set lower than a standard violin. This can be thought of as an alto instrument, a violin can be thought of as a soprano instrument. They are all played the same, with a bow drawn across the strings in order to make the string vibrate, the pitch of which is controlled by the placement of your fingers. As the violin and the viola are the same instrument except for size, they both require similar types of skill sets to play and as far as a learning curve, they're a little bit more difficult than something like a guitar which has frets on it to make the pitches easier to happen. This is a viola.
