Let's examine a coronet. This is a coronet, and as you can see, there's a little bit of difference between the shape of it and a trumpet. The coronet's design is such that the tone it produces is a little more symphonic in pitch and how it sounds to you, a little softer if you will. Like a trumpet, it's a valve instrument, the pitch of which is controlled by the player blowing into a mouthpiece and controlling the omberture with their lips and then using the valves to shift the tones as required for the composition. This may be the first instrument that a brass player would run into in band and school in a junior high school setting. Sometimes a trumpet is the first one played.
