Using Speed Bags in a Boxing Gym

The next area we're going to talk about is the speed bag. Staple for every gym. And I, again I use the term speed bag because the more, the better. In our gym, we set it up with four speed bags. The first one we're going to look at is probably the highest one we have here, and that's the important part here is to have different heights for all the different boxers. In fact, someone the other day asked if I could raise this one a little bit, it wasn't quite tall enough for them. What I like to tell the boxers is, the speed bag should be about your chin height. So this is a little bit tall for me, because you're going to be punching someone into their chin so it's better to be training at your chin height. What we've done here was we've actually taped the top swivel part so that the bag only goes straight back and forth which is a good way for the beginners to learn without having to chase the bag all around. What we've also done was, to put wing nuts where the standard nuts were and that allows us to lower and raise it as we see fit for the different boxers, the different heights, that way everybody gets the perfect height for them which is very important in training. The other thing we've done was, on the top of the bag we've got a balance type bag filled with rocks. Not only does that help the rebound of the bag, but it also lessens the noise a little bit too. So the other bags we have in the gym, all pretty much the same construction, except, different heights. And then in the far side of the wall there we have one set up for our junior boxers and on the floor we actually have a little, a board platform just in case some of the younger five and six year olds can't quite reach the bag and that one's also on wing nuts so that we can raise and lower that one as well. So again, the biggest thing about speed bag is to have an assortment as far as the height. And one of the tricks, in order to get your beginners to learn quicker and easier, is to tape it so it only goes straight back and forth. Thanks.
