Youth Basketball Rebounding: Reading Shots

Hi, this is Sean Hobson. One thing you have to understand about basketball is if you can commit yourself to being a good rebounder, you're really going to help your team. And the best place that this plays into is when you're shooting the ball. Offensive shooters can become some of the best rebounders, and the reason for it is because who knows better where the shot's going than the guy that shot themselves? You can usually tell, as soon as you let the ball go, either it's going to be off the front of the rim, or it's going to be hard off the back of the iron, or it's going to be off to the right, or off to the left. Most of the time you know that when you shoot it, so if you follow your ball and you know where it's coming off the rim, most of the time you can be the best offensive rebounder on the floor. So what we're going to show you right now is just a few skills that, once you shoot the ball, and you read the ball, you've got to be able to read the defender that is standing inside of you. If he doesn't box you out, if he just turns and looks at the basket, you go get the ball where you know it went off at. If you know you left it short, storm the front of the rim. If you know it went off hard to the right or left, that's where you run to, to get the rebound. It's going to make this guy very difficult for him to box you out. So here we're going to show you him reading the ball, where it goes, and going and getting it. Go! So that time he went to get the ball, and even though he knew that it was going to come off to one side or the other, that time it came off the back of the rim a little bit hard, but he got an inside position. He also saw when it was coming off the back of the rim and he was able to run it down. Remember, you as a shooter, you know better than anybody where the ball's going, go in and get it and help your team rebound.
