Youth Basketball Rebounding: Man-to-Man Defense

Hi this is Sean Hobson. One thing that you have to understand in order to be a good rebounder is the person that you're playing against offensively. There are all kinds of different offensive players. There are types of players that like to shoot the ball a lot outside and will miss the same every time. They either over shoot it the majority of the time or they under shoot it. If you're able to understand the type of player that you're playing against and you know that they leave it short every time, you'll know how to box them out and you'll know where to go to get the ball. If they over shoot it every time, you'll also know how to box them out and you'll get the ball. You also have to understand their positioning on the floor. If they're shooting from the left side of the floor, they ball is typically going to come off on the back side. There are also a lot of players that like to drift when they shoot and if you understand this as a defensive player, you'll know that when he shoots and he drifts off to the left that you'll need to box him out to the left and also his ball is going to come off the rim a certain way. So if you understand the player your playing against, There are also a lot of players that as soon as they shoot they like to go ahead and back pedal. In that case you know that you don't have to worry about boxing him out because he's going the negative direction so you can turn and sprint in and help your team in the rebounding aspect. So once you understand the type of player that you have and that you're going against, you'll understand better how to box him out and there are different ways that you box out different types of players.
