Developing a Boxing Footwork Style

The next area we're going to talk about is actually relaxing more, developing your own style. What happens is as I show the new people this footwork stance, for a couple days I'll see them very boxed, like in very rigid, and they'll be doing exactly like Mr. Lefebvre said to do -exactly this, and exactly this. They're real stiff, they're making sure that they get everything perfect. I try to tell them, I say, "Relax a little bit. Develop your own style. What I really want to see is not necessarily the boxed type thing, okay? But what I want to be able to see is to have you develop your own style, okay? Make believe you're a football player with that ball tucked under your arm and you're making it to the other side of that field, that ring." It doesn't have to be exactly six steps forward. It doesn't have to be exactly to the middle of the ring. It doesn't have to be exactly all the way to the left. It doesn't have to be exactly all the way to the right, or all the way back to the middle or all the way back again, but just try to develop your own style so that you're bobbing, you're weaving, you're advancing. It doesn't have to be the box. Get out of the box a little bit. Relax and develop your own style.
