A Boxing Cross Pattern in the Ring

In our next clip we're going to stay with the cross pattern, but now we're going to actually do it in a ring. A lot of times I'll have the new boxers come up to me while the gym is busy and they'll say, "Mr. Lefebver, Mr. Lefebver, I forgot how many steps forward, and how many back and how many to the left," and so I've since put it on the wall. But once you're in the ring it's pretty easy because what we're going to do is as we put our back to the ring, and if I have two boxers, I can have one stand about here and one stand directly opposite in the other side so that we're actually missing each other as we advance and de-advance and then go left or right. But once you're in the ring -and this is about a 16 foot ring, we've got about a 13 foot inside diameter here- so we're going to advance our six steps but even not counting I'm just going to go from here to the edge of the ropes on the other side. So even without counting I'm going to advance all the way to the edge of the ropes, and I like to tell the boxers, "Go right into the ropes. You're going to in the boxing ring anyway, so get right in there and then go right back to the middle of the ring, okay?" You don't have to look down and say, "Yep, this is exactly the middle." After a few times, you'll know what the middle of the ring is. From there you're going to go to the left. If you're a southpaw, you might want to go to the right first. So we're going to go to the left and we're going to go right all the way to edge of the ropes, right into the edge of the ropes, and then we're going to advance all the way to the right, to the other end of the ropes. Each time remember our opponent is directly in front of us, we're trying to retain that same stance so that we're semi-open, not fully open, not fully closed, semi-open, advancing all the way to these ropes, half step increments. All the way back again to the middle of the ring, and then all the way back to right where we started, and that's your footwork pattern in the ring.
