The next area we're going to cover is what I like to call the "footwork in a cross pattern." We're going to end up working a little bit of everything we've learned so far with the slipping, the dipping, the dragging, moving to the left, moving to the right, going forward, going backwards, and we're still not going to throw a punch. Whenever we work on footwork here at our gym, we don't throw a punch at all. The punching will come in with shadowboxing, it'll come in with the heavy bag, it'll come in with the hook and uppercut bag, it'll come in with the mirror work, but when you're working on footwork, we want to just work on footwork for now. So what I'm going to do with a cross pattern is what I have all the new people do, is we're going to take six steps forward, then three steps back, then three steps to the left, a total of six steps to the right, which will cross at that center area, and continue on three steps to the right. Then we're going to take three steps back again to the left and then three steps backwards, and hopefully we're going to end up at the same place we started. So bear with me on this. We're going to start up against the wall, we're going to get into our regular boxing stance. Remember always keep straight line, left toe, right heel, feet shoulder-width apart, and as you advance, never have your feet come too close together. Okay? We never want our heels to touch. So we're going to start six steps forward. We're going to slip, dip and drag, okay? One, two, three, four, five, six. Now we're going to take three steps back. One, two, all the time I'm keeping that straight-on appearance where I'm looking at my opponent straight ahead. Now we're going three to the left. Okay, one, left foot first, two, three, taking half step increments. Now we're going six to the right. One, two, three, four, five, six. Now we're going to continue on three back to the middle, three steps to the left, again, all the while looking at our opponent in front of us. Now three steps back, straight back. One, two, three, and hopefully you'll end up right back where you started. This can be done anywhere in the gym, doesn't have to be done in the ring, anywhere you can get a pattern for six steps forward. If it's a really busy day in the gym you can get the same effect by going three steps forward, one, two, three. One step back, one. One step to the left, one. Two steps to the right, one, two. One step back to the left, one, then one step back. There you have it, footwork in a cross pattern.
