Moving backwards in boxing my dad used to tell me, "Son, never move backwards, always forward." But as we all know there's going to be times when you have to move backwards. If you're facing the heavy bag and you want to move backwards and you're in your stance, again with that straight line going from the bag to your left toe, your right heel, if we decide to move the front foot first when we're going back foot what's going to happen is we're going to cross our legs, okay, we're going to be off balance and we're going to take a chance on falling. You may get away with that once, okay? You may get away with that twice. But at some point the other opponent or the other coach is going to catch on, and as you move backwards they're going to crowd you a little bit, you're going to move backwards, you're going to cross your legs, they're going to hit you just enough to topple you over. So whenever you're moving backwards, move the back foot first and then the front foot. You don't have to pick up your feet to move your feet, okay? The best thing to do is to slide the first one, drag the second one. So we're going to slide the back foot, drag the front foot. Slide the back and drag the front. So whenever you're moving backwards, try not to move that front foot first. When you do move backwards in boxing, try not to take two or three steps backwards, okay? Try to take one step backwards and then move left or take one step backwards and move to the right. Try not to take more than one step backwards if you have to move backwards at all.
