Youth Basketball Man Defense: Trapping on the Wings

Hi, this is Sean Hobson. What we're talking about is how to run a good, effective man-to-man defense and some different things we can do in our man-to-man defense that are going to be beneficial and are going to stop the offensive team. One thing we can do is something called "the trap". Now, if this defensive player, if we can get a wing player to drop low enough, one thing we like to do is we like to trap on the wings. Now sometimes we're going to trap on the wings with our point guard and our top guard. This time we're going to use our post player to come out and trap. If you can get the trap quick enough, it works good. And what we're going to do is, as this post player comes up and it's going to happen, when this guy starts to dribble down and here's what's going to happen: we're going to have this guy jump him on the top side, this guy's going to get him on the bottom side. Now this guys is left alone but what's going to happen is, remember we've got a post player over here in help side and that post player's going to come over and take this assignment on help side. So that's how we're going to trap the wing in the man-to-man. Also, what we're going to show now is sometimes we'll have a team that will step to the short corner and get the post the ball in the short corner. So in this case, any time they get the ball in the short corner, you want to try to trap the short corner because this is the worst place on the floor to have the ball. So our post player's going to come out and our wing defender is going to drop down and trap in the short corner. So two good places to trap in the man-to-man is if you can get them on the wing or you can get them in the short corner. Those are the two best places to trap.
