Youth Basketball Man Defense: Playing Passing Lanes

Hi, this is Sean Hobson. Right now we're talking about the man-to-man defense and the assignments of the defensive player as we go around throughout the defense. Right now, his main assignment of this guy is man-to-man with the man that has the ball. So right now, he's playing defense straight up on the guy that has the ball because that's his assignment. Now, it's going to change a little bit when we go one pass away. Obviously, one pass away does not mean any other player except for the one pass that's next to him. So Zach is going to go ahead and move the ball. Now, he is now one pass away. His assignment has changed in the man-to-man defense. He no longer has to worry about his man because we said, the most important thing on the court is the ball. We always have to know where the ball is and you always have to know where your man is. So right now you can see that we've got Kyle has cheated out here in the passing lane. You always want to have your hand flipped upside down so that you can deny the pass away. You never want to play defense this way because you can't slap the ball with the back of your hand. You want to have your hand out ready to deny that pass. One pass away, you're in deny in the man-to-man defense.
