Youth Basketball Man Defense: Guard Pressure

Hi, this is Sean Hobson. What we want to talk about right now is when using man-to-man defense, one of the first parts of starting out the defense is, getting good pressure on the guards. We don't want to let the point guards just dribble the ball up the floor uncontested and get into their offense easily. We want to pressure the guards. The major way we want to pressure the guards is obviously, standing with a good stance. You can see how that he is tilted to one side. What he's trying to get this guy to do is, he understands that he is predominantly a left handed player, so he's going to want to go to the left side. So right now he's playing this guy to go to the left side. Or if he's a right handed player we want him to go to the left and if he's a left handed player, you want him to go to the right side. So, we want our defender to read which way that the particular offensive player is going to play and we want to shift him that way. Another thing is, if you're going to pressure a guy, you want to be right up on him. You don't want to be way back, that's not considered pressure defense, it's only pressure when we get up. He's got a good stance, he's down low, he's using his hands and he's going to try to cause this guy to create a turn over. That's the way we start our man-to-man defense is by pressuring the guard.
