Fundamentals of Sea Kayaking

In this clip we are actually going to start kayaking. Let's review the fundamentals first. Good posture, connect yourself with the boat, have your feet on the foot pegs, thighs in the thigh braces, and lower back touching the back bend. Then we are also going to transfer energy from our feet, through our body, through the blade. Then also we're going to focus on what we are feeling. This gives us feedback throughout the whole time while we are learning to kayak. A good exercise to do to learn what energy transfer feels like is this. I am going to hold the paddle and Russell is going to press against my hand and use his whole body and move the kayak. There you go. I feel a lot of pressure against the paddle. This will be pressure in the water that will move that boat. It's real important though to keep your arms stiff. They don't have to be totally straight, but keeping them stiff will let you transfer that energy. Watch what happens when he softens his arms; when he's just using his arms. We've lost a lot of energy here so his boat doesn't move as effectively. Now he's going to stiffen them again, press hard on the foot peg. There we go. Now he's going to take a nice reverse sweep, now a forward sweep. There we go.
