Youth Basketball Forward Skills: Boxing Out

Hi, this is Sean Hobson. Right now we're working with our forwards and one important thing is on defense our forwards play a pivotal role in rebounding, especially our power forwards. They're one of our post players. They're down low, they've got to be able to get the ball and clear it out. So what we want to talk about right now is rebounding. And it's crucial to box out. When you're little, you've got to learn how to box out. It's one of the things that people have forgotten to teach over the years, and now kids that are of a young age are horrible at boxing out. If you've got a team that boxes out, you're going to dominate most of the teams around because nobody does it anymore. So we're going to show you a secret, and that's how to box out. All right, on the box out, what we want to do right here is when this guy shoots the ball, the first important thing about the box out is this player has to go find his opponent. He knows the shot when up. Instead of just turning and facing the basket, he's going to allow this guy to come in and go around him. Because remember, this guy knows where his shot's going, this guy doesn't necessarily know. So, he wants to first of all find his opponent, then he wants to lock into his opponent, he wants to get a box on him, then he wants to push him out, and then go and attack the basket. So we're going to show you real quickly what it looks like to box out. Go. Good. You see he goes, he finds his man, he spun around, he boxed him out, then he went and attacked the basket. That's how you box out. It's a crucial thing to do in order to play good at the power forward role.
