Youth Basketball Forward Skills: Following Shot

Hi, this is Sean Hobson, and right now we're working with our forwards. And one thing that we've got to be crucial in our forwards is they aren't the best shooters on the team, but we want them to shoot within the offense. One important thing we want them to understand is also they're very important in our rebounding scheme. So what these guys have to do is they cannot shoot the ball up and let it come off the rim and stand in one spot or fade back on defense. When they shoot the ball, they've got to be able to crash the boards and be pivotal in rebounding. Nobody knows where this shot's going more than the guy that shoots it, because you know when you release it if you've shot enough, you know that when you release the ball that it's either going hard off the back of the iron or it's going hard to the right, or hard to the left, or if you left it short. You know where to get the rebound. So you've got to go crash and get the rebound. So, this guy's going to take a shot. I'm going to give him the ball, he's going to shoot it, he's going to read how he shoots the ball, he's going to crash in, get his rebound, and he's going to put it back in up inside. That's what our forwards have to do within the offense. Okay, so here we go. Shoots, he knows where it's going, it comes right off to his side, he's going to catch it, and then he's going to turn to look, hopefully he can get another shot off, or, if he has to bring it back out and reset the offense he can do that, but really, if we get a rebound inside, I want this guy to try to attack the basket again. But he does a good job of knowing where the ball is and going and getting into rebound.
