Youth Basketball Forward Skills: Fake and Drive

Hi, this is Sean Hobson, and right now we're working with our forwards, and we want to have our forwards have the mindset of being shooters. Most of the time, the best move that a forward can use is the shot fake and drive, because what happens is they can get the ball they can shot fake their opponent, and then they can drive in where they're more comfortable shooting. Most of the time your forwards are going to be more comfortable shooting from about ten to twelve feet in. So, right now what we want to do is, we're going to give the ball to Zach. Here, I'll pass it to you like we're in the play. All right, go ahead and get ready. He's going to get in the ready position, he's going to catch it, now he's going to face up. His defender then is going to close out on him. He wants to read what side the guy closes out. If he closes out hard to the left side, then he wants to shot fake him and drive right. If he closes out hard to his right side, then he wants to go the opposite direction. So he's going to read him right here, and let's just show them both ways. Let's go ahead and close out to the left side. Go ahead. Close out to the left side, he puts the ball down low, you see he dribbles the ball to the basket. Now, let's go the other way. He closes out to the right side, he's going to keep the ball low. You don't want to rip the ball across, you want to keep the ball down low. Go ahead. Good. Now, he stepped down. We want him to take it in as far as he can until the defense stops him, and get a shot away. This is going to make your forwards a lot more of a versatile player within the offense.
