Youth Basketball Forward Skills: Baseline Drive

Hi, this is Sean Hobson, and what we're talking about right now is using our power forwards to get a little bit of space here and get some shots off on the baseline. Pretty much we're going to use our power forwards as post players in most of the plays that we run offensively. So, what we're doing right now is we're going to teach him that when the defender's playing behind and we're feeding the post here from the wing, what we want our post players to do, obviously if they catch and the guy's playing behind him, they can't drop step and drive the baseline because the defender is going to be backed up to them. So what we want to teach them to do is when they catch, they're going to reverse pivot and face up against the defender. Cause him to come out and guard them, then they can shot fake him, step underneath--we call it an up and under move--they're going to shot fake him, they're going to step under the defender, they're going to get their toes squared to the baseline, and they're going to lay it up off the glass. So we're going to kind of walk through it here. So, once I get the ball to the post, he's going to reverse pivot, turn and face up. Now he's going to shot fake. He's shot faked, he steps to the baseline, has good footwork, gets his shoulders squared up to the basket, lays it up off the glass nicely. This is going to give our power forwards a good opportunity to be scorers, because these guys are a little better shooters. Also when he faces up right there, if the defender doesn't come out and challenge him, he can go ahead and shoot the ball, and that's going to be effective as well using a power forward in our offense.
