Youth Basketball Forward Skills: Being Hard to Guard

Hi, this is Sean Hobson, and right now we're working with our small forwards. Remember our small forwards are very much like a guards, in which we want to use them as not only a bigger type of guard but we also want to use them as shooters in our offense. One way that we can get them the ball is we've got to have them in constant motion. We always want all of our players in our offense to me in motion. That makes them very hard to guard. So right now you can see that he's got a defender on him. His main objective is to get the ball, no matter how he can, to get the ball he's going to have to work, stay in motion the entire time. So what we're going to have Kyle do is he's going to run hard in the baseline, he's going to pop back out, if he doesn't get the pass, then he's going to want to pop up. Also, sometimes our small forwards, if they're big enough, and they have a mismatch on them, a smaller guy, sometimes we'll locate that and we'll let our 3 go into the post and post up if they've got a smaller guy on him. So that's one way also that he can keep moving within the offense, he can go post up or whatever. So we're just going to show you real quickly here Kyle trying to get open here in the offense. Go ahead. Good, he's moving. He doesn't get the ball. He's going to relocate. Good, he popped up to the high post, and he got the ball. A lot of times our small forwards will work wing to post to the high post area because they're a little bit bigger, but the main thing is, they've got to stay in motion and they've got to stay hard to guard within the offense.
