Youth Basketball Forward Skills: Getting Open

Hi, this is Sean Hobson, and what we're doing right now is working with our forwards, and particularly our small forward this time. Remember, our small forward is going to be similar to a guard in where we're going to play him out on the perimeter. In fact a lot of times our small forwards and our two guards are sometimes going to switch positions. So, we're going to play him out on the perimeter, so, obviously, to start our offense, we're going to need him to get open for a pass on the wing to start our offense. Now, there's several different ways that he can get open. One we're going to show you right now is a very important one--it's a very basic one that most offenses use called a V cut. Now, when we call it a V cut, that's because he's going to cut down and then he's going to V back up. And what this is going to do is, when he takes a hard run down, his defender is going to run down with him. So, we'll walk through his real quickly. Here, we'll let you go ahead and hold the ball. He's going to come down, and I want the defender to bite hard down, and then he's going to V cut back up to the perimeter. That's going to open him up to get in the flow of the offense. Now, we typically want to run more up to the high post then we do outside, so we want him to cut more up. What we like to do in our offense is we like to start our guys down in a 1-4 low set. So that starts Kyle down at a lower area. Then he can cut up high and he's open for the ball and he's coming to the ball in the offense. So, one way that we get our small forwards open on the wing is by using the V cut to cut down, pop back out hard, and receive the ball, and that's going to get your small forwards open to start the offense.
