Picking a Ski Jacket

In this section I'm going to be giving you a generic run-through on how to pick out your skiing outerwear, and particularly your ski jacket. As you can see here, this jacket has all the pockets and zippers and stuff like that. It's going to be able so you can put all your gear and you can put snacks in it and stuff like that, but it's also going to be keeping you warm. So when picking out your skiing jacket there's a few different things that you want to look out for. The level of waterproofness and breathability are rated on a scale from 5,000 to 30,000. Unless you're going to be skiing in Alaska or someplace where it's really cold, I wouldn't go with a jacket that's highly rated at 30,000, just because it's going to be a little bit too warm for the typical conditions. You want to find a jacket that's somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 waterproof. There's hang tags on the jackets that say all these functions, depending on the specific jacket. The second section of rating for each jacket is its breathability. This is also rated in a similar scale as how waterproof the jacket is. You're definitely going to want a jacket that's not only water proof, but that breathes well. If you're wearing a jacket where your body can't breathe out of it, it's just going to end up smelling and you're not going to be comfortable because none of the moisture from your body is going to be able to escape out of the material of the jacket. So it's really important that you pick a jacket that's not only waterproof, but breathable as well.
