Understanding Relative Wind When Skydiving & Free Flying

Hi welcome to Expert Village my name is Nicholas Daniel. Relative winds is the wind direction that we're referring to as you exit the airplane. Let's just say that this is the door right here of the airplane. As you are leaving you do not want to present your stomach down towards the ground cause what is happening is the airplane is still traveling approximately 80 miles a hour this direction. So what is happening is just as you were sticking out your hand out the window as you are driving on a freeway the wind is coming in the same direction. So indicated by these arrows right here the wind is still coming in this direction. So as you leave the air plane and you actually want to almost present yourself side ways when you are presenting your to the relative wind. So you are coming out side ways you are presenting your stomach or what ever other orientation you are coming out into and you are presenting your self correctly. So once the wind is coming in sideways the relative wind as it transfers in into terminal velocity you actually ride down what we call a hill. If you want to picture the plane being right here but it is moving 80 miles a hour you come out almost present yourself side ways and then as your movement going in this direction slows down you are now picking up speed going down obviously. So going from 80 miles a hour this way 120 miles this way, there is a big change that goes on. Just riding the hill as you present yourself sideways and then going with the wind presenting it belly to earth.
