The Barrel Role Move in Skydiving & Free Flying

Hi welcome to Expert Village my name is Nicholas Daniel. We are going to talk about the barrel roll. It is a fairly basic transition which either be applied a belly to back roll or a back to belly. You can also later combined it and do full barrel rolls or 360's if you will. You want to just start in your neutral belly fly. You want to go ahead to initiate the turn. You want to think about getting a lot of lift on one side of your body and a little bit less on the other. That is going to cause that rotation. There are several ways in doing this. One would be to initiate it with your upper body. Your want to go ahead and take one arm and bring it in. This works fairly well in the sky. We think about grabbing a lot of lift on this side and this would automatically turn you. The second method, which is a little easier to do in the tunnel because there is no forward movement, is you want to think about taking your legs, you want to think about taking one knee, and just going and scissoring it over your other legs and this would catch a lot of lift on this side leg. It would actually move your entire body over. If your were to try a barrel roll in the tunnel you find that there is a lot of forward movement. Try to land in the sky we have this tendency to just bring our arms in and just stick our legs up and turn. But again it has a sort of forward track to it. To start the barrel hole you want to be fairly comfortable with belly and back fly. You want to transition from one to the other and then later you want to go ahead and combine it. Using your arms and legs to scissor them over you can go ahead and go from your belly to your back and then once you are comfortable with it you can continue that movement from back to belly. Then adding those two movements together will create the entire barrel roll.
