How to Do the Head Down Position in Free Flying & Skydiving
Hi welcome to Expert Village I am Nicholas Daniel. Head down is far most the most popular position in free flying. It is the one that everyone tries to get to. However it be very difficult for you to obtain if you only focus on it cause you have to have all the other skills as well. Keep in mind skydiving in general is just pushing air. It does not matter if you are free flying or belly flying. It is all the same thing. For head down there is basically two standard neutral position if you will you have the daffy position and the straddle position. On here they look very very similar but except one is a side view and the other one is a front view. The daffy in generally consist in you having one leg in front and the other one behind you. Again keeping a stability you kind of what to get that shape of a badminton feather ball. Straddle position is just like that you have the legs basically out to the side. It is a little bit faster fall rate but, general most people prefer it in the sky because it is a little bit more stable. You start the forward and backwards movement with your head. What you want to do is go ahead and in order to go forward is by bringing your chin forward a little bit and just go ahead and bring your shoulders out. This is already going to start the forward drive. Later to increase it you can go ahead and fold your legs back as well to go ahead and basically to make this giant sail if you will. Keeping your hands in front will keep you a little bit more stable. If you have your hands back here you generally have the tendency to cork, so definitely want to have your hands up in the front. Opposite of that backwards it is just the opposite you want to bring your chin in a little bit, roll your shoulders forward, you want to have your hands probably behind you, you can also might need it out to the outside again for stability. Once you get more comfortable with it you can go ahead and bring your feet in front of you again to act like a giant sail. If you have a fast fall rate all you really want to do is you just want start bringing your leg a little closer together and your arms in, however this a tendency to become fairly unstable. You start to get that speed wobble if you will. So make sure you do everything nice and slow. For turning the way I generally present it is I start out with the hands. All you want to do is go into your neutral position you just want to take one hand just pretend like you are pushing off of something and have your other hand flipped around. So you almost like this. Go ahead and turn it the other way. Once you get to that point you are comfortable with the hands then go ahead and get the arms involved. Go ahead and use your forearms as well. You want to go reach out a little bit more. Start getting that movement in there. Once you are comfortable with those two you can go ahead and incorporate the shoulders as well. More with upper body. So from here you can go ahead and turn it. Last but not least, legs: if I bring my knee up like this, angle it out, it is actually going to push in this direction because the airflow is coming in this way and pushing my legs this way.
