The Back Fly Position in Free Flying & Skydiving
Hi welcome to Expert Village I am Nicholas Daniel. Back flying is the first thing that you should learn if you are interested in free flying or if you are belly flying it is also a great position to learn. Due to the fact if you ever find yourself becoming flipped over. Generally what we are looking for is this right here it is a neutral position and extremely important is that you have 90 degree angle pretty much all over your body. So you want to start of with the hips. You want to have 90 degrees right here, legs right here you want to have 90 degrees, you want to have 90 degrees at the arms as well. You want have your head nice and relax if you can you can just look straight up a lot of people have the tendency to put there chin up in to there chest and what that does it changes the body position. Just similar to belly flying you want to have kinda a little arch going on this way. It will give you a little bit more stability. You have your center of gravity you to make sure that point is low just like if you where belly flying. Legs generally for stability also as well you want to have your knees further apart. Again you don't want to stretch them out that will induce a drag so just make sure you have a 90 degrees everywhere. Going from a neutral position we have our forward position or forward drive if you want to go towards your head all you really need to do is just extend you legs a little bit. Or if you want to you can bring your arms kinda down to the side of this orientation. Again you don't want to have them touching your body like this you just want to kinda have it out here. Going the opposite direction backwards towards your feet all you really need to do is extend your arms towards your head. Really nice and tall get that chin back, you want to bring your knees all the way in towards your chest, also again for stability you can widen your knee, and you would go ahead and drive towards your feet. For fast and slow fall rate basic principle just like in belly flying you want more surface area to have a slower fall rate. So the way that you can achieve this is by extending your arms out a little bit and then go ahead and bring out your legs a little bit. You can also widen your legs little bit so just think about getting a little bit bigger. Faster fall rate just like in belly flying you want to think about increasing this arch right here. This by bringing the center of gravity a little bit lower. You could also bring in your arms and your legs in a little bit it will make you fall a little bit faster. Turning very very simple basic body position as well you generally have your arms right here all you need is to induce a turn is just drop one hand just like this. Notice that you still have 90 degrees at your arms you are not reaching over anything like that. It can actually create a side slide. So you just want to gently go from here and have 90 degrees as well. Later on you can induce a turn as well with your legs all you want to think about is if you have your foot right here. Taking the heel and moving it on there direction it will turn towards to the heel.
