Youth Point Guard Skills: Stopping Breakaways

Hi, this is Sean Hobson, and what we're talking about right now is working with our point guards. Right now our concentration is, in the offense our point guard is usually going to be somewhere close to the top of the perimeter. Usually it's the point guard's responsibility that when a shot goes up and the defense rebounds and they're becoming the offense, we always want our point guard to sprint down and be the guy that stops the ball in transition. So what we're going to show right here is as soon as the shot goes up, when I shoot the shot and they get the rebound. The white team right now is on defense. If the white team gets the rebound, then this guy has got to sprint back as fast as he possibly can to around the three-point line, and even if it's not his man, he's got to locate where the ball's at, and he's got to stop the ball so that that guy doesn't dribble all the way down to the other end and make a layup. This is our first line of defense, of getting back. He also has to make sure that when a shot goes up that this guy doesn't take off sprinting to the other end and beat everybody down the floor, because then it's going to be basically the point guard's fault. So this is what it looks like at full speed with our point guard getting back, sprinting back on defense. All right, here we go. Get back, good, good. Now, you see as they bring the ball up on offense--good--he was the first one back. He sprinted back, he got himself in a good defensive stance, and he was ready to stop the ball, and that kept this offense from running down and scoring a quick basket.
