Texas-Shaped Coaster: Smoothing Edges
Okay, we're ready to finish our project out now. I'm going to show you this edge banding technique. This is a thin spool of wood that you can get at your local home store. It has a heat sensitive adhesive on the back. I've got my trusty iron heated up here. We're just going to take scissors and cut pieces to fit and iron them on. The first thing I'll do is cut a piece to fit across the top. Go right to the edge and right to there. Then take the scissors and snip it off. Our next piece is going to go right here. Sit it in there and get it right to the edge and snip it off. I like to take just a little bit of the glue that we used before, very little. Just put a little bit on there because it helps you hold that band in place while ironing. You don't want to use that much or else you'll interfere with the adhesive. When you use this to unroll enough of it for the whole piece and lay this down flat. Because, you can see, this is all curled up and we have to iron that curl out. If you cut some pieces in advance, they'll tend to flatten out a little bit. And the same process again. You want to make sure that this strip is down and contacting the table, because it's important to get the part of this that's against the wood at the bottom. You want it to stick to that wood real good. Some of these little curvy places can be pretty tricky. That looks pretty good. That looks like it's going to stick okay.
