Summary: The art of watercolor painting has been practiced since the time of Egyptian antiquity in the form of fresco wall painting, a process in which water-based pigments were applied to wet plaster. Watercolor painting also has a rich history in Chinese and Japanese painting, and has been used to add color to manuscripts in cultures throughout the world. What we think of as modern watercolor painting began to develop in the 1500s with Durer's landscape studies. The popularity of this medium spread and spawned many disciplines of watercolor painting, including the 17th century British school, and California style of the 1920s.

In this series of free art instructional videos you'll learn the basics of watercolor painting. Expert graphic designer and watercolor artist John R. Junger shows you what supplies you'll need to get started, discusses the various types of paper, its weight, grain and water absorption, offers tips on setting up your pallet and planning compositional elements in your painting. He also shares techniques for creating washes and adding details that will have you painting like a real pro in no time.

Expert: John R. Junger has a wide and varied background as an artist. John received his Masters degree at Lindenwood University. He has taught at several Junior Colleges as well as Lindenwood University. Mr. Junger has been awarded prizes in national shows and has been elected to the Northern Lights Artist Association.
