Summary: Childbirth is one of the most difficult, painful, and also joyful, events that can occur in a woman's life. After nine months of pregnancy, a woman will begin the labor process to deliver a baby. There are generally three stages of labor. The first stage is the shortening and dilation of the cervix and begin once the cervix has dilated to three centimeters. Contractions also begin in the first stage of labor, though they may be irregular and sporadic. The second stage of labor begins when the cervix is fully dilated and the mother will begin to push. In the final stage of labor, the placenta will detach from the uterine wall and the baby will be delivered from the birth canal.

Understanding what happens during the labor process is a wonderful way to alleviate any fears that a pregnant woman may have. In this free video series, a certified doula and pregnancy expert will explain the stages of labor. Learn about the emotional and physical signs of the first stage of labor, the time frame for the early stages of labor and what to do during that first stage. Get tips and information on the physical and emotional signs of active first stage labor, and learn about the transition into the second and third stages of labor. If you are pregnant or have a pregnant wife or partner, let an expert go through each step, in detail, or childbirth.
