Summary: Cheerleading is a competitive sport that is made up of organized routines that include tumbling, dance and gymnastics. It had its beginnings at Princeton in the 1880's with a now familiar organized crowd chant that went, “ra ra ra sis boom ba!” It wasn't until 1898 when a student, Johnny Campbell, stood in front of the crowd to direct them and became the first “cheerleader.” The first squad was formed soon after that with a group of 6 men at the University of Minnesota. It is interesting to note that although over 97% of cheerleaders are women today, the sport started out as all male. It wasn't until the 1940's that it became a female dominated sport.
