Summary: Yoga poses have become increasingly popular as a form of exercise and meditation. The focus of yoga is a holistic one, employing a broad range of practices which focus on a new way of living, thinking and being in the world. Aimed to unite the mind, the body, and the spirit, the health benefits of yoga are also great and varied. From relieving stress to strengthening and toning muscle, integrating yoga positions and exercises into your daily routine can be beneficial on many levels.

In this free video series a registered yoga teacher, Teresa Thompson, will introduce you to chair yoga for seniors. This is a healthy and fun yoga routine that is designed to help those with old age, disability, weight issues and injuries. You'll begin your yoga routine by first entering a deep meditation. Teresa will show you a few breathing techniques to help warm and ready your body for yoga. You'll then learn several exercises, such as: back-bends, hip openers and forward folding. She'll even teach you a few poses like the tree pose, boat pose and warrior stretch. These poses and stretches will increase your flexibility. After a short closing meditation Teresa will leave you feeling well and ready to face the day.

About the Expert

Expert: Teresa Thompson has an MA, is a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) with Yoga Alliance through the Cincinnati Yoga School and is an instructor at Barefoot Works Yoga Studio in Lexington, Kentucky. She is well known for her work with senior citizens and with individuals challenged by cognitive or physical disability. She gently encourages students to nurture body, mind and spirit through the practice of various forms of yoga.
