Summary: Fifty to sixty-six percent of children who have ADHD will continue to have the disorder as adults. Adults with ADHD face unique problems in the home, workplace and their personal lives. ADHD is often found alongside substance abuse, depression and some learning disorders. The mental health community continues to grow in its understanding of and ability to treat adults with ADHD.

For those adults that have been diagnosed with ADHD, a lifetime of medications can seem like a terrifying thought. However, the effects of the disorder require some form of management. But, this doesn't mean that you have to succumb to the medication route. Our expert, Taylor Smith, has been living with ADHD all her life, and she has found some ways to minimize the symptom of the disorder. Simple things, like the intake of caffeine and sugar, can help with ADHD. Also, learn how meditation, exercise, organization, and therapy can help. If you have a hard time sleeping or eating, Taylor gives tips for helping you cope. So, if you have ADHD, don't think that medication is the answer! About the Expert

Expert: Taylor Smith, CMA, is a multifaceted Certified Medical Assistant. In addition to the standard training needed for this credential and the experience that comes from working in the health care field, she also has supplemental training in nutrition, alternative therapies, meditation for mood modulation, and the particulars of ADHD in both adult and pediatric populations. ADHD is a particular topic of interest due to having the disorder herself. The bulk of her CMA work has been done in Sleep Disorders, with occasional forays into Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. She made the shift into health care after 10 years of classical ballet training, a passion which she still pursues. She also has experience and training in improvisational comedy and team-building skills.
