Summary: Remember the old days when people would challenge each other to duels with swords and fight in castles? Probably not, but today that same conflict resolution has evolved into a modern day sport. Fencing is in fact only one of four sports that is featured at each annual Olympic games. Saber fencing is one of three styles of fencing which incorporates attacks to the head, arms and torso. The competitors wear metallic suites that send a signal to a monitor, which informs who struck first in the attack. Fencing utilizes defense and quick actions in order to determine the ultimate sword fighter.

In this free video series our expert Gerry Duran will teach you all about saber fencing. You'll learn a defense called a parry along with several attack methods like thrusting and cutting. Gerry will introduce you to the scoring system as well as compound actions, which are great for deceiving and attacking your opponent. In the end you will have all the knowledge you need in order to ensure that you're the last one standing.

About the Expert

Expert: Gerry Duran is a recreational sport fencing coach.Coaching recreational sport fencing has been part of his life since 1987. In that year he attended a fencing coach's seminars called 'Foil and Sabre' in Orlando, FL. From that day on, Gerry knew he was destined to become a fencing coach.In 1991 and 1992 Gerry entered the United States Fencing Association's (USFA) coach's college at the Olympic Training Center, or OTC, in Colorado Springs, CO. He founded 'Tampa's Fencing Academy' in Florida in 1992 and became a lifetime member of the U.S. Fencing Coach's Association. Ten years later at age 62 he retired from his day job so he could dedicate 25 hours a week to teaching and coaching sport fencing at the Academy and local private schools. He later revisited the coach's college at the OTC for 3 weeks of coach's training in 2005.
