Summary: Exhaust gas recirculation, or EGR, is a NOx emissions reduction technique used in most gasoline and diesel engines. EGR works by recirculating a portion of an engine's exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders. Mixing the incoming air with recirculated exhaust gas dilutes the mix with inert gas, lowering the adiabatic flame temperature and reducing the amount of excess oxygen. The exhaust gas also increases the specific heat capacity of the mix, lowering the peak combustion temperature. NOx is primarily formed when a mix of nitrogen and oxygen is subjected to high temperatures.

On occasion, an EGR valve that controls recirculation will have to be maintained or replaced. In this free video series, a car repair expert will teach you what tools you need for EGR valve replacement, how to find the valve, and how to remove a brake booster hose. You'll also learn how to unhook the exhaust gas recirculation hose, how to prep the mounting gasket surface, and how to reconnect the EGR valve to the engine system. With these automotive tips, you can perform maintenance on your cars by yourself, and save a lot of money in the process!
