Summary: The drum is perhaps the oldest known musical instrument and its basic design has not changed in thousands of years. Far from today’s uses as a percussive foundation for pop music or for fueling marching band excitement, drumming has a more profound history as a method of communication, and as an implement of religious symbolism.
In this free video series, our expert Shaun Schaefer will teach you how to do paradiddles on the drums. He'll teach you how to hold the drumsticks, talk about drum rudiments, and tell you how to read the time signatures 4/4, 2/4, and even 6/8. He'll also teach you how to play 16th notes, single and double paradiddles, how to use paradiddles in drumming, and even go over some common problems playing paradiddles. He'll even teach you the paradiddle diddle, and the paradiddle drag.

Expert: Shaun Schaefer’s love for the drums began at age 11. After a couple of years honing his skills in the school band, he was asked to be in a rock band. Throughout high school, Shaun continued to play, winning many awards for his percussion skills. At night, Shaun was playing at local clubs and bars in the Cincinnati area. During this time, he shared the stage with Big Brother and The Holding Company (Janis Joplin’s band), and national country act Frazier River. However, it was a small recording session with Cincinnati legend Brian Lovely that changed Shaun’s life. Lovely introduced Shaun to Matt Senatore, a producer with the alias “Emosia,” the award winning producer for Blessid Union of Souls. This afforded Shaun the opportunity to meet the guys from Blessid Union, eventually leading to recording sessions with the band. And with that…a relationship was born. Shaun graduated from The College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati shortly before getting a call from the Blessid camp in December of 2001. Shaun continues his tenure as the drummer/percussionist for Blessid Union of Souls, working on his 6th year of service for the band.
