Summary: An afro, sometimes called a "natural" or shortened to "fro", is a hairstyle in which the hair extends out from the head like a halo, cloud or ball. This may or may not include wearing such afros long, to several times the diameter of the head. An afro requires very curly hair, and is often styled with an afro pick. The afro pick is an adaptation of a traditional African grooming instrument, which is essentially a narrow comb with long, widely spaced teeth. Similarly, added volume can be achieved using an afro pick in combination with the heat from a hand-held hair dryer. The effect is called a blowout afro.
One important thing to remember about afros is that they require a lot of effort to style and maintain. However, with a few tips on grooming and styling techniques, it doesn't have to be as hard as it looks. In this free video, a hairdresser will teach you everything you need to know about styling afros, from products and creams to foils and hairspray. You'll also learn a number of techniques, including how to part afros, how to wrap hair in foil, and how to use hairpins in afros. With a little time and finesse, you can have an afro as soon as possible!
