Summary: There are many forms of kayaks including sea kayaks, fishing kayaks, whitewater kayaks, surf kayaks, racing kayaks and inflatable kayaks. A kayak is a motorless boat that is propelled by a manpowered paddle. Kayaks can accommodate up to three people and usually have a cockpit-style seat for each person under the deck of the kayak. Kayaks differ from canoes because they are smaller and propelled by double-ended paddles as opposed to single-ended paddles.

About the Expert
Phil Meyer started his kayaking career in Colorado in the days when kayaks were made in the backyard out of fiberglass and river trips meant stopping in eddies to duct tape your kayak back together. He enjoys instructing kayaking and SWR almost as much as just playing on the rivers. While he was the manager for the Costa Rican Outward Bound School, he and friends captured several first descents. He was also featured in “Chasing the Jaguars: The Complete Guide to Costa Rican Whitewater.” He is an ACA Whitewater Kayak and Advanced Swiftwater Rescue Instructor. Phil is now the paddle sports manager for the Texas Rowing Center in Austin, Texas.
