Summary: Strokes are a very serious medical condition where blood vessels in the brain are either damaged or blocked. There is no doubt that a stroke is an instant medical emergency. Even with medical attention, many stroke victims fail to survive. In the Western world, a stroke is the third leading cause of death after heart disease and cancer. Strokes cause ten percent of deaths worldwide. Depending on the quality and speed of medical attention, many stroke victims can completely overcome strokes. However, more than 75% of survivors have some kind of disability immediately after the experience. There are two kinds of strokes: ischemia and hemorrhage. Ischemia strokes occur when there is a lack of blood supply to the brain. A hemorrhage stroke occurs when a blood vessel is damaged in the brain. A hemorrhage stroke is thought to be more life threatening than an ischemia. Brain swelling and seizures can develop with blood sitting on the brain.
