Summary: The tambura, named after the Tambura River in Romania, is a Bulgarian stringed instrument more commonly known as a lyre. The tambura originated in the Serbia, Croatia area centuries ago and is still used to play traditional Slavic folk music. There are several different types of tamburas. Some have three strings, some have four. There are some tamburas that have double strings. All of them look basically the same. They have a long neck with a deep, gourd-like body.

About the Expert

Expert: Carol Lakshmi has dedicated her life to the study of music, art, and Eastern philosophy. While studying guitar in the late 60’s, she was exposed to Indian Classical Music and devoured as many different Indian instrumental and vocal compositions as she could find, incorporating some of those styles into her own compositions. In 1993, on a personal search for a spiritual path, Carol had the opportunity to study harmonium and tambura in a traditional yoga meditation school. She has been playing and teaching the tambura for fifteen years and continues to practice yogic disciplines and Indian music.
